Here I was in NYC, sitting in a Board Room with a Movie Producer who’s films were some of my favorites, Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull to name a few. She was the partner of Martin Scorsese and truly a gifted producer. I had grown quite fond of her she stood about 5 foot 2 inches about 110 pounds but I knew at any moment she could kick my ass as she was a New York tough as nails. Her name is Barbara De Fina and she wanted to produce my movie Manic Ride. It was a story about me and my experiences as an entrepreneur that I wrote and rewrote about a thousand times.
A lot of questions were running through my head those days, the biggest being “What the hell was I doing here”, I looked at the big movies about people and I don’t know what in my life would make it to be a feature film. I thought I was pretty much just ordinary dude trying to create a few things here and there and make them successful.
My entire life I really liked to create things. I would have ideas one after another running through my head a million miles an hour and I would have to figure out which idea to grab of and which ones I should filter out. It was kind of cool, I could be anywhere and deal with anything and figure out how to make it better, but it was also a pain for my family who only wanted me to make a good living as a salesperson.
I had gotten myself or the products I created into major publications, tv shows across the nation. I never had a problem taking something from nothing and getting it right to the top and then usually having the whole things crash down for one thing or another. I was paper rich and then really broke about many times in my life.
What does that mean and how do you get there? Well ask some of the biggest Corporations now in our economy how they could have billions in sales and then go bankruptcy? In my case, it was a lot to do with getting to big for my management at that time or circumstances in the economy. When the internet was big in 2000 I created a site called reoganizenow.com Someone I got a lot of major corporations and a search engine as partners, was worth paper millions and then bubble crashes and me along with hundreds of internet millionaires are broke eating peanut butter without the jelly because you can’t afford it.
Getting back to point…. why in the world would someone want to make a movie about my life as an entrepreneur? Well, the movie itself is a positive movie where the main character in the end finally creates a really big business and rides off into the sunset. (Shoot, I wrote it.. what do you think the dude was going to do?) Well, it was all pretty cool except the fact that the script wasn’t complete and I knew it. There was no big sustained success, no final venture that allowed all the other little ones to make sense, it was cool being in this meeting, it is amazing dealing with Barbara but I knew the story wasn’t done yet and I had wrote to do.
I slowly stepped away with the grace of a bull in a glass factory and spent time finishing up my idea of a website to finance film and other creative’s and cleaning up a patent for this process I created. About two years later I partned with the State of California Film Commission and a bunch of individuals in the film industry I admired and got ready to launch the whole thing! Here is is my time!!! I had finished the script, got a top producer, created a web model that revolutionize the film industry, partnered with some of the best and biggest names in the industry and it was all going to happen! I would finish my movie ending in real life!
Well.. not so much…
With everything together and all kinds of people counting on me I ran into a family issue that made me postpone it all and at that moment I thought it was done. I have the most amazing daughter who takes priority over anything in my life and I had to adjust my focus. She was one of three of our amazing kids.
The next two years I tried to fix things with band aids working away from the people that were there to support and guide me and I made mistake after mistake, bringing in the wrong people who had good intentions but not for what I was doing.
I officially lost it all in 2008 and took the time to get a grip on what I was doing. I realized that the greatest investors of our time understood that failure was only failure if it wasn’t a lesson learned. I then looked back at my lessons, restructured my life and began to finish what I created. In January of 2009 I finished and launched the main site http://www.howudewin.com gaining back a lot of the companies, individuals and building something far better then it was two years ago.
The biggest lesson I learned was that not only should never give up on your dreams and what you believe in, you also need to adjust and listen why things may not be working out. Look at the lessons you learn and fix them then continue your quest.
Well, it looks like we are going to go ahead and make the movie now and launch this program in mid January. I created dewingood.com, yokeiseasy.com as my way of giving back to others and I created realestatefaces.com to help those dealing with low housing markets. I hope they work out and you enjoy them.
